Happened to run into a school reunion at Bar George (Also on Saturday night) by almost pure coincidence. Holy fucking hell. never thought I'd feel so out of place with people I went to school with... Wrong crowd.
Island School can be categorized into 4 main distinct groups.
1) The White, preppy, pretentious British expats and their suckups (which includes sellout Indians and Chinese). Tend to be able to entire bars underage without ID checks. Almost all the school's head boys and girls have been from this group. Although covert about it, clearly look down at the other 3 groups. They probably also feel remorse that Hong Kong is no longer "their" territory.
2) The outcasts. Main language of communication is English, but usually not both White and British. Usually have some characteristics that would result in them being sent to mental institution in other schools. Often a lot of them don't even get along with each other.
3) The druggies. An extreme version of the Outcasts. Not too many in the school since they've either been expelled for the 5th time or sent to boarding school in England with papa's money.
4) The Cantonese crowd (aka Chinatown). Relatively new addition to the school. Also includes many CBCs or ABCs who after seeing what kind of people lurk the other groups, have decided to "rediscover" their Chineseness. Some of them like to humiliate Group 2 people and accuse them of stealing phones.
As for Group 2, we had plenty of crazy people in our year. SB the "maths freak", Vivek the "I love to punch holes in floppy disks" reject, Boaz the testosterone high Jew. And me and A.
Last night, the entire crowd came from... you guessed it, Group 1. Talk about all the "popular, blonde, prodigal" converging in a mass. I didn't see a single other Chinese person from our year. One thing I find interesting about British people is their tendency to act all friendly and polite to you upfront, then castigate or demean you behind your back (It's good to have some nonsurreptious acquaintances). One of the girls, Alexa Massingham, seemed quite friendly last night as she did back in high school. Hmmm... so why is it that of the 250 people I've added to my Facebook, she's been the only one to reject my friend request (twice too)? Diu lei lo mo, even that fuckhead Luther added me. And it's not like I ever wronged her in the past... Meanwhile at Bar George, me and A just found that the pookguys and bahtmui's just kept giving us the cold shoulder and eventually we decided to get the fuck outta there.
I remember back in Year 12 when the wall along the Macdonnell Road tram stop was covered with anti-Island School graffiti. To this day, I'm surprised no one covered the school in it.
