For the past few weeks, I've been out on a couple engagements with this dude, I'll call P. Except for his occasional analness, I get along with him pretty well. I guess because no one else seems to. Because he's Indian?
Racist? Xenophobic? Maybe. I got sent out to his 2nd job in Tseung Kwan O last Wednesday. Man, what a bunch of blunt colleagues I got to work with. There was this one dude, Tommy that spoke English with a heavy Cockney accent that soon got the best of me, holy fucking hell. Every 10 seconds he'd dout out some random insult directed at P in Cantonese with the rest of the group. And of course everyone else would concur and the convo would continue. Something on the lines of "that fucking paki smells like shit" or "Paki king is fucking incompetent, giu kui pook guy lah", "why doesn't he go back to India where he belongs", "diu, I can't bloody understand his English". All this right in front of the noneotherthan P of course!
Later on the cab ride home, had a conversation with P.
P: That Tommy, sometimes I just wanna smack him
Me: He does seem to be a bit of a prick doesn't he
P: You don't seem to talk much with them do you? But you understand them speaking Cantonese do you?
Me: Hell yeh, I do. Every word of it, even the not so cool stuff
P: Yeh, I know what that TOmmy's saying. He thinks I'm sitting there like a fool, but I knew he was on about me, that's why I shoved most of the work to him.
I guess the highlight of the engagement was seeing them head on over who's more incompetent, right at the client's office!
Now let's look at the flipside. If the in charge was another non-Chinese, but a gweilo, would they make as many comments as they did? I think not. Come on people, what's new? The lighter the skin color = the greater the respect. Why? Must I spam your visual display unit with drivel again?
Never mind what I think about managers at PK (I'll have a go on them another day), but what's up with bloody Hong Kong Chinese that think just because they've lived in the "glorious kingdom" of britain for a few years, he's above everyone and is allowed to around intimidating people with his Queen's English. Would've thought living in a country with thousands of South Asian immigrants would make you more tolerant of them, but I guess the opposite is true?
