Over Chinese New Year, Lea Salonga was in town and I had the chance to see her perform at the Cultural Center. For those who don't know, Lea is an award winning Broadway singer/actress from the Phillipines. Her major breakthrough was a role in Miss Saigon, soon followed with being the first Asian to perform in Les Miserables. She's performed for Disney. Although I'm not too much a fan of broadway stuff, this was well worth it. During the performance she did mention her 4 year marriage. Having lived in the states for many years and sporting an American accent, you'd think she's yet another gweilo sellout. But a search for her online and she actually married a Chinese-Japanese guy! Hmmm. Correct me if I'm wrong, are there any major Philipina celebrities married to gweilos? Sitting next to us that night was this gweilo grandpa ah gung, probably around the age of 70 with this Fillipina chick, probably no older than 25. They were not the only ones. With those high heels and tattoos, anyone wanna guess where that geezer found her?
So while there is the stereotype that we East Asian dudes get the cold shoulder from chicks of all races, perhaps we just have standards unlike some people. And dignity.
I had the best of luck to overhear a convo at Causeway the other day between some gweilos raving about how ALL Chinese men are all butt ugly (despite the fact that they were a bunch of hairy, overweight, greasy slobs themselves) and they were having the time of their life travelling around Asia. Yeah, we understand English in Hong Kong you know! Pook guy, seefat hamsup gweilo! I guess we must ALL be so goddamn ugly that Al Gore's youngest daughter (Sarah Gore) married one of us and or that the Russian Duma is trying ban marriages between their women and Chinese citizens!
